A Good Cigar

Back in the late sixties, I was on a TV commercial shoot in London, where the
Exec. producer was handing out Cuban cigars like they were M&Ms.

I’ve been smitten by good cigars ever since.

In fact every Monday evening I slink out to the patio—my wife detests the
smell — and savor a good cigar with a double shot of bourbon. And for that hour my old-age travails dissolve into aromatic smoke with notes of earth, spice and heaven.

A Good Cigar

A good cigar
can ease
this mortal ride,
though
a lustful
bride
at dawn
can put even
the finest
Cuban
to the test.

Heroin
works
for some
but the price
is high
compared to,
say,
a heady blend
of power & fame
followed by
a world
cruise
on the QE2.

Till it all sinks
leaving you
marooned
on Palm Beach
playing Bridge—
a cigar,
your doctor
continues
to remind you,
simply
out of the question.
